| As far as building the deck crew I did modify a few of
them, for example I chopped off a pointed hand and switched it to the Cat shooter. |
|
|
| One figure that was made up of several parts was the green shirt
who is ducking under the wing (yes that really does happen), his torso, one arm
and legs are from the Hasagawa USAF figure set, and the head and the other arm
are from the Fujimi set. Otherwise it was a lot of careful painting and
washes to get the proper effect. This was the first time I have ever done
figures since I was a kid, and they were not as hard as I thought it would be
and turned out well.

|
| Fujimi provides decals for the stencils on the back
of the figures, but I realized it after I had hand drawn them on, and in the end
I wanted to avoid silvering anyways, so I left them alone. I built some
accessories for the deck crew, including a book with real paper for the Cat
operator to hold (they check weight settings), a fire extinguisher from the
Fujimi set, Navy chock blocks from the same set, and some tie down chains (from
a R&R supplier). |

|
| Also needed for a carrier diorama is a few hold back
bars that I built up with plastic tube and florist wire. I also put a hold
back bar on the cat track that has just been released (I think a bolt breaks on
them) and the small triangle shaped mount it sits in.

|
|
| As a final touch I
added cotton to the cat track since steam is released when the cat is fired, and
on the inner lip of the intake, because in the moist sea air condensation builds
up when the engine is at full power.

Now that I have done my first Diorama, I think I
will do a few more since it is not that hard and the pay off in the end makes it
worth it. Now I have ideas of doing a S-3 Viking (wings folded) coming up
on an elevator, a A-6 caching the number 3 wire, some "grapes" fueling
up an F-18 and some red shirt ordies loading up a F-14. The modern carrier
deck is full of Diorama ideas and is a place full of action. As we head
towards an uncertain conflict there will certainly be the gallant efforts of our
Carriers and all of the Naval Aviators, I would like to dedicate this project to
them. Hope you all enjoyed it!
