This new decal
sheet from Cutting
Edge Modelworks includes markings for four different 1/48 N1K2-J Shiden-Kai
's. The recommended kit for these decals is the 1/48 Hasegawa kit.
The first aircraft is
a N1K2-J Shiden-Kai # 343-C-45 flown by Lt. Takashi Oshibuchi of
343 Kokutai, Hikotai 701 in May 1945. The paint scheme for this aircraft
is overall Dark Green (aprox. FS 34092) on top and natural metal on the
underside. On the tail is the yellow letter "C" with the yellow
numbers 343-45 below it. The red national insignias on the fuselage have a
white border. Oshibuchi, the squadron 701 Leader, used the 60kg No. 27
aerial burst rockets for the first time against American bombers on May 5,
1945. There is 2 diagonal white fuselage bands directly behind the
cockpit. The wing leading edges are yellow. The
second aircraft is
a N1K2-J Shiden-Kai # 343-B-20 of 343 Kokutai,
Hikotai 407 in March 1945. The paint scheme for this aircraft is overall
Dark Green (aprox. FS 34092) on top and natural metal on the underside. On
the tail is the yellow letter "B" with the yellow numbers 343-20 below
it. The red national insignias on the fuselage have a dark border and the
white #20 on the centre. The wing leading edges are yellow.
The third aircraft is a N1K2-J
Shiden-Kai # 343-A-15, US Navy (former 343 Kokutai) from Omura airfield on
October 16, 1945. The paint scheme for this aircraft is overall
Dark Green (aprox. FS 34092) on top and natural metal on the underside. On
the tail is the original yellow code letters have been painted over with what
appears to be Olive drab. On the tail are the tail codes TAI 001 in
yellow. TAI stands for "Technical Air Intelligence". The
Japanese national insignia on the fuselage have been painted over with American
markings. The wing leading edges are yellow.
